fallen into correction territory. wall street really coming off a terrible week, leading to questions about whether the fed is waiting too long to drop the rates. these are the numbers from friday. the dow fell nearly 2%, the nasdaq plunged more than 2.5%. moving into correction territory. that's 10% below its recent high. tonight, many investors worry the us economy is headed right toward a recession, and bitcoin and ether tumbled over the weekend amid a broad sell off in the crypto market. >> bitcoin sank to just over $53,000, in its lowest since late february, while ether traded below $2,400, its lowest since late february. analysts attribute this drop to several factors, including lower than expected payroll numbers released on friday and uncertainty over the upcoming

10:42 pm

presidential election and the latest jobs numbers show hiring slower than expected. >> some economists are concerned by the decline. financial planner james mcbride says he believes while wall street may be sounding alarms, inflation is on track to reach the fed's 2% goal and unemployment is historically low. >> you have pretty doggone good unemployment numbers extraordinarily good inflation numbers. when you look back, say just a couple of years. so you have the fed doing a pretty great job based on the numbers. >> fed chair jerome powell suggested the fed could start to cut interest rates next month if inflation continues to ease. >> some analysts say that hurricane bertha, which hit texas hard last month, may have skewed the employment figures. ktvu tom vacar takes a closer look now at the numbers to see if the market's fears are justified. >> though the nation's job market is still growing, it's very clear now that it has cooled off substantially. in response to that, the always nervous stock market worried

10:43 pm

about a possible recession because the federal reserve has not yet cut interest rates. so it took its biggest nosedive in two years. >> today's numbers don't indicate that we're in a recession by any means. they indicate that the job market has slowed. >> former edd director mike bernick, an employment lawyer at the international law firm of duane morris in san francisco, says the relatively lower number of u.s. jobs created last month is significant. >> today was a surprise in terms of the steepness of the loss. we've been averaging about 220,000 jobs per month, this morning it was down to 114,000, and the unemployment rate did increase slightly to 4.3%, the highest since october of 2021. >> wage increases have also cooled back. in 2022, wage increases were nearly 6%, wage growth continuing to slow down

10:44 pm

to 3.6% year over year. >> last month, it was 3.9%. the month before, it was 4.1%. >> hiring has slowed or flattened in many sectors. new hires mostly concentrated in health care. other gainers were in government construction, transportation and warehousing. but to a lesser degree. the once massive gains in leisure and hospitality hiring have leveled off for the better mid-level and higher jobs. competition is intense, but a range of sectors they're getting 100, 200, 400, sometimes 800 applicants for each job. the inflation rate has decreased to 3.3%. it nearly obliterates the 3.6% in wage growth. mr. bernanke says. we won't know if we're in a recession for another 2 to 3 months at least. but by then, the federal reserve should have begun interest rate cuts. tom vacar, ktvu, fox two news.

10:48 pm

center is opening up in honolulu and it's one of the largest in the country. this new facility aims to really enhance delivery capabilities across the islands. while also bringing new jobs to the state. fox's jill kuramoto has the story. there you go. >> congratulations. richard merrick. >> a blessing ceremony marks what many say will be a game changer in hawaii's economy. amazon says its new $300 million delivery station at sand island will provide 500 jobs, plus an additional 1100 indirect jobs in hawaii. the e-commerce giant says it already supports over 1000 local small businesses and expects that to grow. >> we're going to continue to invest in the growth of our transportation network. and we do that through growing our commitments to empowering small businesses on the islands. >> the governor hopes amazon will be a major partner in the future. >> it's multimedia. it's potentially an overture to do naming rights for our stadium.

10:49 pm

there's a lot of things that amazon just might be able to do for us, which helps a lot of different sectors. and so we welcome them, but we especially welcome them for the jobs for our local people. >> with 500,000ft!s of space, this facility is one of amazon's largest in the country, along with three cargo planes and 300 delivery vans in its fleet. amazon says it aims to be able to deliver packages in two days, so we receive it at the honolulu airport. >> we work with third party vendors there, who then take that volume. they put it on one of our trailers, and then our trailers will meet us all the way at the far end of the building. that's where our inbound dock is. >> as one of amazon's newest facilities, they've implemented some of the top of the line technology here. and this conveyance belt is an example of that. once the packages come in, they'll be placed on the belt. a computer scans that package and it decides which hamper to drop that package in. an employee will come take that package, scan it, which will tell them which tote to place it in. they'll put the package in these

10:50 pm

totes. the tote will be placed in a delivery van and then it's off to you. operations are scheduled to start august 6th, with the first deliveries going out on august seventh. jill kuramoto khon two news i'm back here in the bay area. >> a water main burst in a martinez neighborhood. it happened overnight near valley and truitt avenues. a few blocks from nancy boyd park. firefighters and the city public works team responded to the scene, shutting off the water around one this morning. they repaired the main by about six. neighbors say it's not the first time this has happened in this area. >> we woke up in the night to a lot of noise. water is rushing out and which happened before the same spot. and then we our ditch gets washed and but this time it was quite, quite a mess. >> officials told neighbors to run their sprinklers before turning on the water inside their homes to clear out any leftover sediment in their

10:51 pm

pipes. >> all right, this week's going to be about hot inland and mild to very warm to hot around the bay. this happens on tuesday. the hottest day of the week would be the hot and the valley stays pretty warm. but along the coast we're going to have a sea breeze at sticks around and brings temperatures up essentially like these. these are the highs from today. tomorrow is going to be a lot like this in terms of temperatures. and then tuesday day after tomorrow temperatures are going to go up. they're going to spike. and then on wednesday they're going to come back down. then they're going to get back down to this level. so tuesday, wednesday or the hot days and especially in the central valley it will stay hot. and we could see triple digits. concord could go 100 degrees, livermore could go 100 degrees. 101 degrees. a lot of fog out there now. it's deep. it's a deep marine layer. and that's how you know it's going to be a mild day tomorrow. it's one of the one of the clues. i mean it doesn't mean it has to be. but you see the greens and you can see the topography, how it see that's the warmer the higher temperatures away from the, you know, topographically the marine

10:52 pm

layer is able to get into all these spots up through the delta and up into sacramento. but you can see it can't get over into winters. it can't get over into arbuckle in those areas. so a pretty good size, pretty depthy marine layer. and that's how it'll be tonight. so tomorrow is kind of a nice day. kind of mild. kind of like today. and then tuesday it warms up quickly as high pressure builds in. so tomorrow morning's forecast you see the fog and low cloud. that's a pretty decent size fog footprint. and then it burns back. and then this this temperature footprint is pretty much you know that's classic summer right there. temperatures inland though you see the purples further east. those are the low one. hundreds. this is tomorrow tuesday. the purples are going to come all the way to here to where my hand is. right. and then so that means the reds and the oranges. the 90s and the 80s are going to push further towards the west. but that seabreeze isn't going to get shut off. so temperatures around the bay will remain manageable for the most part. so tomorrow morning there's the fog and then it burns back some some tropical moisture comes in on tuesday and

10:53 pm

the fog gets limited to the coast. and that's your hottest day of the week. that's the long-range model or not. the language. that's the 48 hour model. these are the forecast highs for tomorrow. then it looks a lot like today. and then again spikes tuesday wednesday a little bit warmer than this. and then thursday friday saturday not a lot cooler but cooler back into the upper 80s and low 90s. on for the latter part of this week. that means thursday, friday, saturday. will you see that in the five day forecast? right. temperatures peak on tuesday. wednesday they start to cool thursday, friday, saturday and sunday they are pretty mild, almost like what we just had this weekend. >> all right bill thank you. we'll see you at 11. dozens of booths lined walnut avenue in fremont for the 40th annual fremont festival of the arts. there were plenty of vendors offering everything from glassware to jewelry and a lot of great food options as well. a first time attendee from the south bay said he's glad to see these events actually benefit

10:54 pm

the local economy and the community. >> pandemic covid took a lot away from us and it's just now starting to rebuild. so i think it's really good to see it. you know, this many people come out and participate in this promising. >> organizers were expecting tens of thousands of attendees this weekend, and neighbors in sonoma enjoying some new improvements to maxwell farms regional park. >> park officials announcing the completion of the project on thursday, and residents have been already using the new fields for baseball and soccer games. ada accessible pathways are now installed, so visitors of all abilities can access all areas of the park. >> all right, a dramatic finish in the men's 100m left the winner and the silver medalist both stunned. cristina rendon will have that story coming up next in sports. >> and then coming up tonight on the 11:00 news, members of congress want to investigate a company based here in the bay area, why they suspect the business is using unfair practi that gave them

threw the first pitches to seth brown and bobby crosby, bottom of the first dodgers up by two brant rooker at bat, connecting on river rhyne's pitch to deep center field to tie things up. check out that fan catching the two run homer ball. it is rooker's 28th homer, and then we go to the third. same score. dodgers have one on cavan. biggio lines a ball up the middle. jason heyward will come in to score and then biggio is thrown out at second. with that run, the dodgers snatch back the lead and hold on to it. they win three two in the last year, track star noah lyles has made it really clear he is undoubtedly the fastest man in the world and today he proved it. check out this photo finish here for lyles as he snaps a 20 year drought for usa in the 100 meter final, winning his first olympic gold. he beat jamaica's shane thompson by 5,000th of a second. thompson believed he was the winner, but once lyles name came up first on the video board, lyles snatched off his
